Capsule Wardrobe

Fall Capsule Wardrobe

This post is sponsored by Walmart, but as always, all opinions in this Fall Fashion Finds post are 100% my own.

One thing I’ve found while preparing to move into a new house, is that everything needs to be made as simple as possible. For me, everything also includes my wardrobe. By having a capsule wardrobe, I’ll be able to downsize but still have plenty of unique outfits so I’m not accused of being an outfit repeater (name that movie!!).

You can shop all these looks and more over on my LTK here.

Basics

When starting a capsule wardrobe, it can feel a bit overwhelming. We are used to choosing what items to buy based solely off what we see and love, but now we are faced with the opportunity to minimize and simplify. So the best place to start is with items that can be layer #1 of your outfit.

Basic White T-Shirt – Every closet needs a basic white t-shirt. This is the perfect piece that will layer with ANYTHING. Find a style you love, and start there. If you prefer a more relaxed fit, then here is another option you may prefer.

Mock-Neck Top – Another great base for layering is a mock-neck top. This gives a bit more around the neckline, and allows for a good variation in your wardrobe. This top can either be black or white, or you could benefit from a great neutral color.
Graphic Tee – All of your clothing items don’t need to be blank and neutral. You still want to express yourself! With that, a great choice is a graphic tee. This can be a concert tee, or just a basic that you love! These are great for layering under jackets, wearing by themselves, or even over the top of a basic dress.

Long Sleeve Bodysuit – Bodysuits are great for giving a nice, put-together look with a simple top. These are paired with so many different things and can be versatile year-round. If you don’t like the feel of bodysuits, then a long-sleeve basics top will also do the job! I recommend having both a white and a black option.

Outerwear

Flannel – Nothing screams fall like a good flannel. Throw one on, grab some boots, and you’re ready. Choose a length and color you like, so you’ll be wanting to grab it often.
Denim Jacket – This is not only a must for your fall capsule wardrobe, but is something that everyone would benefit from in their closet. It dresses up any outfit, and makes even the most basic fit seem put-together.

Striped Sweater – This is a great piece that will work for both winter and summer. By doing a basic striped sweater, you’re giving some variation to your wardrobe without adding something that isn’t versatile. You can do a piece that is half zip, like the one I shared. Or you can do a knitted pullover. Whatever you see yourself wanting to wear most.
Blazer – Here’s where we start to get a little crazy (emphasis on a little). This is going to be at your discretion. A blazer is a great way of spicing up an outfit, but if you’re not one who is going to wear it, then I recommend foregoing it in your wardrobe. No need to add something you won’t wear.
Black Leather Jacket – This is a MUST. Leather jackets are a staple for stepping up your outfit. It’s easy to pair with, and it’s something that will age nicely. Very much a staple piece.

Bottoms:

Denim Jeans – Everyone has their FAVORITE pair of jeans. These, are one of mine. The fit is fantastic, the cut is flattering, and the price is unmatched.
Black Pants – These can be whatever type of black pants you would like. Some people opt for a black pair of denim, while others like a stretchy jogger. Just find whatever you’ll be likely to wear, and go with that!
Light Pants – With light colored pants, you could do a white pair of denim, a linen pair, or even any light colored pair of bottoms. Make it comfortable!
Black Knitted Dress – This knitted black dress is the perfect option to add to your capsule wardrobe. The length is around mid-calf, perfect for the cooler weather. A basic black dress can pair with anything. Dress it up, dress it down.

Shoes:

Chelsea Boots – I feel like Chelsea boots don’t need a big explanation. They’re a solid pair of shoes that can be very versatile. Which is exactly what you want in a capsule wardrobe.
Black Flats – A pair of black flats are great because they can be worn when you’re wanting to dress up your outfit, or they can be worn with jeans and a t-shirt.
White Sneakers – These are the perfect basic sneaker. And the best part is that they’re under $20! Get yourself a good pair, and then keep them nice and clean!
Platform Mules – Last, but not least. Platform mules. These are going to be another optional item. If they’re not something you will consistently wear, then go ahead and omit them. But if you think you’ll wear them, you’ll LOVE them! Comfy and very stylish. Definitely a win/win.

Accessories:

With accessories, keep it simple. Get a few pieces that you LOVE and then layer. You’ll find that you only reach for your favorites anyways, so why have more than you’ll wear? Here are some of my favorites that I’ve found from Walmart.
